From the Bottom Looking Up…
Inspired by the song “From the bottom looking up” by The Bar (Bambu and Prometheus Brown).
Esperanza Fortez (Espy) and I submitted this video as the final project for our ES373 taught by Professor Rod Labrador at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. We tried to combine everything we learned about the unique ties of history and ethnic studies with hip hop.
The music montage of the community pictured here is Kalihi, a neighborhood in Honolulu, Hawai’i that is known for being a gathering place for new immigrants to the island. It is also home to Farrington, the largest high school on Oahu. It also happens to known as one of the neighborhoods of lower income on Oahu.
We chose this song because to us it represents a call for change. We think it is telling us that just because you’re at the bottom, by no means do you have to remain there. You just have to keep your head up and push through.
